The development of pottery in Sifnos is mainly due to the abundance of refractory clay, the rainwater, the presence of fuel, the mild climatic conditions, the technique and the good performance of  the locals in the art of clay processing. Thus, with the passage of time, the name “Sifnios” was identified with the professional “tsikalas”, “potter”, “jug”.The  potters of Sifnos moved to nearby or farther islands, as evidenced by the place names that have been preserved in many Cycladic islands and testify to their settlement. They also developed activity in various areas of Attica, such as Maroussi, Chalandri, Agia Paraskevi, etc. but also in foreign countries.Today, the pottery of the island prepares useful items for cooking or storage.The mayor of Sifnos, Ms Maria Nadali, emphasizes that the pottery and the mines, through the coordinated actions of the municipality, promote the island internationally. The promotion of the cultural heritage, strengthens the culture, the tourism and the development in the unique island of Sifnos.
