Free WiFi in public spaces is provided by the Municipality of Serres, after the completion of the project about the Development of Wireless Broadband Networks, in the framework of the European Initiative WiFi4EU.
The project concerns the installation of free wireless Wi-Fi hotspots in public spaces, along with the European Union funding.
The Municipality of Serres, having secured the financing coupon in the 2nd call of the project, provided wireless WiFi, in the following points:
- at Kronio Square, with two Access Points,
- In the Sports Center of Serres: at the Indoor Gym with two Access Points, at the Indoor Swimming Pool with one Access Point, & in the surrounding area of the Sports Center, with five Access Points,
- at Skoutareos Town Hall Square, with one Access Point.
The wireless network, developed by Euroaxes, in collaboration with the Municipality, enables the citizens and the visitors in the Municipality of Serres, to utilize the new technologies and the internet, as well as to develop the local business, through the seamless access to the new Digital Age.
Furthermore, the Municipality of Serres and the mayor, Mr Alexandros Chrysafis, aims at establishing the bicycle as a means of transportation in the town urban area, operating the public bicycle system. A total of 40 bicycles will be available to the citizens for their transportation. The stations of the public bicycles are located at Eleftherias Square, in the central park, at the university campus of Serres, at the beginning and at the end of Exochon Street.
The main goal of the project is the citizens’ habituation with cycling and cycling routes, reducing car use, saving energy and protecting the environment.
